First Thoughts: The first book, Storm, was action-packed and an enjoyable read, so I’ll see what the next Merrick brother’s up to.

The blurb sounded average, and it was clear it would be an opposites-attract romance between Layne and Gabriel. As I started to read though, I realised that I’d been judgemental – and wrong!

I loved not knowing what was happening with the fires; I loved the subplots woven through the main story and the emotional turmoil that followed the action. The end blew me away because I didn’t figure it out.

In Book 1, Storm, the pace seemed to slow and then it would suddenly rush along like a storm, but in Spark the pace burns steadily – warming the reader to the story and characters. It crackles and flares up creating an incredible heat between Layne and Gabriel, while once in a while bursting into an uncontrolled wildfire of fists flying in the Merrick household, and then ebbing into an emotional aftertaste of burnt ashes. Whether the heat’s on high or low, the pace bubbles up and down in all the right places.

Layne and her brother a super addition to the existing cast of characters in the series, but if I push myself to be critical I have a few niggles about the setting and backstory. Still, I’m now hooked and want to get my hands on another Elemental story.

If you’ve read any of the books in the series, what did you think?

  1. I really need to get caught up in this series, it sounds so amazing! Glad to hear you’re loving it and that you’re so hooked. 🙂 Fabulous review!

  2. I only skimmed your review because I have yet to read the first one in this series but I am so happy that you liked the second so much! I hear such great things about this series and plan to read it soon. I hope you love the next one just as much 🙂

    1. Thanks Jenni, I’ve finished Spirit and the review will be up tomorrow morning. I enjoyed it, but not as much as Spark. I think it’s because the twins are my favourite characters and Hunter couldn’t steal the limelight, but I know a few people who feel otherwise 🙂

  3. I have yet to read this one, but it’ll be soon as I have Spirit on my shelf waiting patiently. I’m so glad you enjoyed this one, I was hoping that Brigid K. didn’t disappoint >.<

    Lovey review hon! <33

    1. I’m glad you loved Spirit, I really enjoyed it, but this one’s still my favourite so far, and after Breathless I have a feeling Nick’s story will come a close second …if he doesn’t push Gabriel out of the way altogether 😉

  4. Ohh it’s better than Storm?! I loved, loved, loved Storm and I was guttered to find it switched POV’s for the rest of the books but then I got over than because I loved the writing style. So I’m glad to see that this book is even better!

  5. Glad you enjoyed this so much! I’m terribly behind, but I really need to read these, I keep hearing how fantastic the Merrick boys are. 🙂 Lovely review!

  6. I agree, Katja, this was even better than the first! I loved the romance between Layne and Gabriel. She wasn’t the normal looking girl who gets a makeover and then he notices her. Nice that it deviated from the usual plot device. I also loved how Gabriel was with the younger brother! So sweet. Wonderful review. I can’t wait for the next one. 🙂
